Soft Geometry challenges the traditionally rigid symbolism of geometric form.
This form has long been associated with masculine ideals of strength, stability, and rationality. In this series, geometry is softened, blurred, and reimagined, reflecting a symbolic shift from ego towards a more compassionate awareness beyond the self.
Stephen Glover is a practising artist and art educator based in the Dandenong Ranges, currently working out of Stain Studio at Burrinja Cultural Centre.
With an extensive solo and group exhibitions history, Stephen’s work has garnered national and international attention. He was awarded at the iconic Linden New Art Postcard Show in 2018, and his artworks are held in collections across Australia, as well as in Denmark, Greece, the United States, Germany, England, and India.
In recent years, Stephen has presented major solo exhibitions at Yering Station Art Gallery (2023) and Up Gallery (2024). His practice is grounded in a long-standing interest in abstraction, shaped by the influences of Robert Ryman (process), Robert Rauschenberg (found object), Alfred Leslie (scale), and Sean Scully (composition).
"In this work, I’ve softened and blurred traditional geometric forms to invite a more compassionate, introspective reading—where the ego gives way to a symbolic awareness beyond the self."
Stephen Glover
His works create physical entities where colours, shapes, and textures come together as components in a metamorphosis of the visible. Context and scale play a vital role in shaping meaning, while fragments—drawn from texture, patina, and memory—are collated to capture the essence of what has been seen and felt.
As an amateur trumpet player, jazz improvisation’s sound and space also subtly infuse his visual language. The flat surface becomes a field of endless possibility, where objects become images, and images, objects.
