Burrinja Presents
Sat 18 Oct – Sun 30 Nov | Burrinja Lyre Gallery
Alongside Revisions, this exhibition showcases artworks by Warlpiri artists who are internationally recognised for their use of traditional iconography and an unrestricted, evolving colour palette.
In 1985, Warlukurlangu Artists was incorporated in Yuendumu, 300 kilometres Northwest of Alice Springs, as a direct result of the birth of the modern Aboriginal desert art movement in Papunya. The maintenance of culture was the driving motivation for the elders, most of whom were also leaders of the men’s and women’s ceremonies.
Artworks by Warlukurlangu Artists are internationally recognised for the use of traditional iconography and an unrestricted colour palette. Artists have developed their own particular styles, which are constantly evolving.
Main artwork - Karnta Jukurrpa (Womens Dreaming). 2024 Acrylic on canvas Meredith Napurrurla White (c) The Artist
The arts centre in Yuendumu currently engages over 600 artists who also come from nearby outlying communities, such as Nyirripi, Yuelumu, Laramba, Willowra and Alice Springs to sell canvas paintings and craft items.
Many of these artists are included in this show case illustrating the story of their on-going connection to their country, the features of the landscape, plants and animals that are found there, and the creation myths that occurred in the Dreamtime. These stories are still relevant to the artists today.
Warlukurlangu Artists is supported by funding from the Australian Government through the Indigenous Visual Arts Industry Support.
